The Perth Amboy Fire Department is an all career fire department located in Middlesex County, NJ. Perth Amboy is the most populated city in Middlesex County, with a population of nearly 60,000 according to the most recent census. The Perth Amboy Fire Department currently responds to calls from one fire station, whilst a second fire station is currently about to be built. Currently, the department operates two frontline engines, with two reserves, one truck company, with one reserve, one heavy rescue, one fire boat, a foam tender, and a plethora of support vehicles. The department is staffed by a mere 100 personnel, where they staff a shift commander, two engines, a ladder, and rescue 24-7-365. The fire department also specializes in marine rescue / firefighting, dive rescue, and all technical rescue disciplines.
Engines 1 & 2
Engine 1 and 2 are these twin pumpers built by Pierce Fire Apparatus. They are powered by a
The new Engines 1 and 2 are replacing a 2013 and 2014 Pierce Arrow XT pumpers, with 1500-GPM pumps and 750- gallon water tanks, which will be moved as reserve apparatus and become Engines 5 and 6. The other two spare engines (engine 3 and 4) will continue to be additional spare apparatus. Engine 3 is a 1998 Pierce Dash 2000/750/30F, and Engine 4 is a 1994 Pierce Lance with a 1500/1000.
These twin pumpers are built on Pierce Arrow XT chassis’s with 152” pumper bodies. They are powered by Cummins L9 450hp motors, with Allison 3000 EVS automatic transmissions. The pumpers are equipped with, Waterous 2000-GPM midship pumps, 750-gallon poly water tanks, front and rear spring suspension, and has a Pierce Command Zone electrical system. Features on Engine 1 and 2 include a 10' 4" overall height, a 32’ 1” overall length, Whelen emergency and scene lighting, Roll-up compartments, four crosslays, triple air bottle storage compartments on the pumper body, a hose trough for 25’ of 5” supply hose in both sides below the pump panel, a hannay booster reel with 150’ of 1” hose, seven total discharges on all four sides, pole mounted scene lights behind the cab, and a Task-Force-Tips Crossfire deck gun. Both of these engines have a 22-inch painted steel front bumper with two hose trays, a 6-inch front intake, 2.5” outlet, and a recessed Federal Q Siren. The “working end” of these engines contains two rear 2.50” outlets with 1.50” reducers, a 5-inch supply inlet, three hosebed dividers, hosebed lightning, and long tool storage for a 10’ folding ladder, a 10’ pike pole, and an 8’ pike pole. The officers side of these twin pumpers feature low-side compartments with ladder and hose storage above the roll-up compartments. The storage above the compartments contain one 24’ 2-section, and one 14’ roof ladder, and two pike pole tubes. The ladder storage is mounted on a Zico ladder rack.
