MIDDLESEX, NY — August 24 — The Middlesex Hose Company is honoring Gary R.Oppelt, a dedicated member and former chief who spent 53 years serving the department and its personnel.His long tenure played a significant role in shaping both the organization and its members.

Oppelt began his service with the Middlesex Hose Company after relocating to the area in the early 1970s.

Throughout his career, he held various leadership roles, including fire chief, first assistant chief, company president and vice president, trustee, and commissioner of the Middlesex Fire District.At the time of his passing, he was still serving as the company's vice president and a commissioner for the fire district.His obituary notes his 53 years of commitment to the company and his ongoing involvement in the community.

During his time with the department, Oppelt witnessed and contributed to major changes in the volunteer fire service, particularly in areas such as equipment, communication systems, training, and facility improvements.

He was also acknowledged by the Town of Middlesex for his contributions to the Hose Company.
