On the morning of July 24th, the Jersey City Fire Department held its annual memorial ceremony for members of the department who gave their lives in the line of duty. Bayview Cemetery is the gravesite of Fireman James McCarthy, of Steamer #3, who was killed during a fire and building collapse in 1872, in the current neighborhood of the Holland Tunnel. In attendance were active and retired members of the department. In the photo, L-R, are Gong Club Treasurer Paul Schaetzle, Chief of Department Jack Johnson, and Father Pagnotta. The event began when fire dispatcher and Gong Club member, the late Ira Rubin, discovered the gravesite of Fireman McCarthy. The wreath was supplied by the Gong Club. Captain Todd Tarrent and the members of Rescue Co. 1 were recognized for restoring Fireman McCarthy's headstone. Chief Johnson stated, in reference to the job, "...it is more than a profession, it's a promise. When the community calls, we will answer." "Time has not erased our loved ones."
