Yaphank, N.Y. — August 19 — At the Suffolk County Fire Academy on Monday nite, firefighters from the Center Moriches and Mastic Beach fire departments participated in practical live-fire drills.

In order to improve communication, teamwork, and operational abilities, the joint training put firefighters in actual fireground settings. According to Center Moriches, members cooperated with Mastic Beach firefighters through a number of difficult evolutions.

Firefighters can practice their abilities in controlled environments at the Suffolk County Fire Academy in Yaphank. The academy has been used by Center Moriches for live-fire drills in the past, including as a Class A drill in April 2026 that was held in a two-story training facility meant to resemble a residential complex.

Firefighters received live-fire training to enhance their collaboration and fireground skills during that earlier exercise. Regular practical training at the school is part of the department's attempt to maintain members ready for emergency operations, according to the department.

Additionally, Mastic Beach often offers live-fire training. The department's emphasis on preserving real firefighting abilities is supported by its social media posts, which show members finishing training sessions at the Suffolk County Fire Academy.

Firefighters from both departments had a chance to collaborate during the August 18 session before perhaps coming together at a real mutual-aid emergency.

Center Moriches expressed gratitude to the Mastic Beach Fire Department for cooperating with its personnel throughout the training that evening.
