On July 20, a joint motor vehicle extrication training exercise was held at the Brooklyn Transfer Station by members of the East Brooklyn Fire Department and Mortlake Fire Company.
The scenario replicated a car hitting a halted tractor-trailer on Route 6 at about 60 mph. For two fictitious patients—a trapped driver and an unrestrained passenger in the back seat—firefighters rehearsed scene size-up, patient triage, resource management, vehicle stabilization, extrication, and emergency medical care.
According to department officials, the practical exercise improved multi-agency collaboration and gave new members invaluable experience handling challenging vehicle rescue situations. Additionally, the agency invited community members who would like to volunteer to attend its Monday nite sessions.
