Gales Ferry, CT. — July 23 — The Ledyard Fire Company and the Gales Ferry Volunteer Fire Company, 1772 Route 12, participated in a cooperative maritime operations and water rescue practice on the Thames River. Firefighters practiced victim rescue tactics on land and in the water while working toward the qualifying standards for the department's new marine unit. Additionally, crew members studied interagency coordination for water crises, boat management, and rescue protocols.

Frequent maritime training improves mutual assistance relationships and helps firemen stay proficient with specialized equipment. The drill enhanced both departments' operational readiness and equipped them to react to events on the Thames River and other nearby waterways in a safe and efficient manner.
