Marshalls Creek- Back in 1964, this Monroe County fire company responded at 4:08 a.m. to a tractor trailer fire on RT 209 just north of Marshalls Creek. The rear trailer tires were on fire. Unknown to the firefighters, the trailer contained dynamite and blasting caps which then exploded. There were no markings on the vehicle which killed three firefighters and critically injured two firefighters and destroyed three fire trucks. Thirteen other people were injured. This incident later promoted the concept of identiying hazardous materials for shipping with placards.
