In order to assist drivers in responding safely in the event that their car catches fire, the Athol Fire Department issued crucial vehicle fire safety reminders on June 5.

Drivers were instructed by officials to stop as soon as it was safe to do so, use turn signals, and go to a safe spot away from traffic. After stopping, drivers should shut off the engine, get out of the car right away, and never get back in to get personal items. While waiting for rescue personnel, everyone should get at least 100 feet away from the burning car and stay out of traffic.

Department officials stressed that car fires can spread quickly and advised people to put their own safety first by dialing 911 and keeping a safe distance from the vehicle until firefighters arrive.
