This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

GREENFIELD, MA. — June 2 — Greenfield Fire Department personnel trained firefighters from all shifts in auto extrication and vehicle stability. The practice concentrated on methods for securely removing occupants from seriously damaged cars and stabilizing them. Using vehicles provided for training, firefighters conducted rescue operations, giving personnel a controlled environment in which to go through actual scenarios.

Byrne Towing provided the vehicles and equipment required for the exercise. Firefighters who receive regular extrication training are better equipped to handle difficult traffic incidents. Since a large percentage of the department's calls are related to motor vehicle accidents, practical training is crucial to operational readiness.
