4-alarm fire in Jersey City

Photo by RON JEFFERSJersey City firefighters reposition Ladder 6 to raise its bucket around overhead power lines, along the narrow end of Montgomery Street, in the downtown section of the city, at the scene of a 4-alarm fire, May 30th. The initial alarm was transmitted for a brush fire in the rear of a structure. Heavy fire was discovered, with extension into a vacant thee-story building that was under renovation. Fast-moving flames rose to the roof and into the Bravo exposure, which was separated by a small alley to a large church. Access problems into the rear yard and water supply issues hampered the initial attack. A partial collapse at the second-floor level near the stairway temporarily trapped firefighters, who were quickly removed from the debris. They suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Five occupants of Exposure Bravo were assisted by the Red Cross.
