Munhall Crews Train on High-Rise Rescue Techniques

Munhall, PA - Members of Munhall Central Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company, alongside Munhall Volunteer Fire Co. #1, took a different approach to drill night by focusing on high-rise rescue challenges.

With several high-rise buildings in the area, crews explored what to do during a medical emergency when elevators cannot be used and traditional stair chair operations are not possible. Firefighters discussed potential anchor points and alternative rescue strategies before putting a practical scenario into action.

Using a rope-based lowering system, crews maneuvered a patient basket down stairwells by feeding rope between railings, allowing the system to support the weight while rescuers guided it safely around each landing.

Once at the bottom, the operation was reversed, converting the setup into a haul system to bring the basket back up.
