West Forks, ME — April 25th — In remembrance of Eugene Cole of the Somerset County Sheriff's Office, the West Forks Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, located at 2878 US Route 201, observed Corporal Eugene Cole Day. In 2018, Cole was slain while performing a routine patrol; this incident affected agencies throughout Maine and beyond.
Every year, first responders take a moment to honor his dedication to public safety and the dangers that law enforcement faces. Members observed that the emergency services community still uses "1312" as a symbol of respect. The celebration emphasizes interagency cooperation and symbolizes responders' joint duty to continue the mission Cole served throughout his career.
