Tampa, FL.
Tampa Fire Rescue crews responded to a reported structure fire at the Bay Colony Apartments in the 5000 block of E. Colonial Drive on Saturday, April 5th, at approximately 3:20 AM. Multiple 911 callers reported a fire on a second-floor rear apartment balcony, that was spreading rapidly. Upon arrival, Engine 15, found a two-story apartment building with heavy smoke and fire showing from a second-floor unit and roof.
Firefighters initially made an interior attack on the fire but were evacuated as conditions deteriorated. A second alarm was requested, bringing additional resources to the scene. Firefighters conducted primary and secondary searches and confirmed that no residents were inside any of the other units. Firefighters transitioned to a defensive posture and began extinguishing the fire from the exterior using multiple hose lines and an aerial ladder. The fire was under control within one hour and fifteen minutes. After extinguishment, crews checked for hot spots to prevent rekindling.
Tampa Fire Marshal's Office fire investigators responded to the scene, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Approximately 20 units were affected. The American Red Cross was requested and is assisting families from the impacted residences.
One civilian was evaluated on scene and transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. No other injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.
