NEWTON, NJ — March 17th — Following reports of several abandoned canines in a forested area, members of the Stillwater Area Volunteer Fire Company, located at 929 Stillwater Road, responded to the Swartswood section. Firefighters helped volunteers and Newton Animal Control set up humane traps along pathways. Using thermal imaging cameras, which are frequently used to find heat signatures in low-visibility situations, crews entered from opposite ends.
One of the approximately eight loose canines was found, secured, and turned over to animal control by firefighters during the operation. Responders erected traps that caught more dogs. The remaining animals were being captured by animal control, who stayed on the site. There were no reported injuries.
