South Berwick, ME — March 1st — In remembrance of fallen Berwick Fire Captain Joel Barnes, who passed away on March 1st, 2019, firefighters met this morning at the South Berwick Fire Department. Firefighters from neighbouring agencies joined department members for the station's yearly memorial service. During a mutual aid reaction to a residential structure fire in Berwick, Captain Barnes passed out.

Although other firefighters and emergency medical staff started saving his life right after, he eventually passed away from injuries he received there. The Maine fire service was deeply affected by his passing. Firefighters take a break on March 1st every year to commemorate Captain Barnes' dedication to the community and his service.
