Westfield, CT - On 28th March 2026 Saturday evening, the Westfield Fire Department, along with leaders from surrounding mutual aid departments, gathered at the Inn at Middletown for their annual banquet and awards ceremony. Each year, the department recognizes outstanding individuals through the Firefighter of the Year Award and the Chief’s Award.
The Firefighter of the Year Award is presented to a member who consistently demonstrates dedication, reliability, and a strong commitment to mastering the skills of the profession. This year, the honor was awarded to Firefighter Edwin Waldsmith Jr.
The Chief’s Award recognizes an individual who contributes significantly behind the scenes to ensure the department operates smoothly. This year’s Chief’s Award was presented to Tax Collector Leanna Harris.
In addition, Past Chief Darrell Ponzio was recognized for 25 years of service as a department officer. Ten members also received years-of-service awards, acknowledging milestones ranging from 5 to 60 years of dedication.
Unit citations were presented to members for their response to a building fire on Meetinghouse Lane, as well as for their efforts in saving the life of a critical trauma patient involved in a dirt bike accident.
The department extended congratulations to all award recipients and expressed gratitude to everyone who attended the ceremony.
