Cicero, NY — March 3rd — The history of the US national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner," was acknowledged by members of the Cicero Fire Department. In 1889, the U.S. Navy officially acknowledged the song for use. A joint resolution officially recognizing the song as the national anthem was enacted by the US Congress on March 3, 1931. On the same day, President Herbert Hoover signed the resolution into law.

Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics during the War of 1812 after seeing Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor being bombarded by the British. Later, the song was frequently performed at national ceremonies and patriotic gatherings. It is still heard frequently at public gatherings, memorials, and civic events as a symbol of the country's past.
