Lockport, NY — March 7th — The Cambria Fire Company held ice rescue drills at Cambria Town Park to have members ready for situations involving freezing water. In addition to reviewing self-rescue protocols in case a rescuer enters the water, firefighters tested methods for rescuing people who fall through ice. Crews practiced using specialized ice rescue tools and finished a number of simulations meant to mimic actual emergencies.
Departments in Western New York, where winter conditions can create risks on ponds, canals, and other waterways, should get ice rescue training. Firefighters need to be equipped to use rescue sleds, ropes, and flotation devices safely in cold temperatures. Ongoing training, according to department officials, helps guarantee that members are prepared to react to ice and cold-water crises swiftly and safely.
