February 28, 2026 — The Lamoine Volunteer Fire Department, along with family, friends, and fire service members from across Hancock County and surrounding areas, gathered to honor the life and legacy of Fire Chief George “Skip” Smith.
Chief Smith dedicated 49 years of faithful service as Fire Chief, leaving a lasting impact on both his department and the community he served. The memorial service stood as a meaningful tribute, with numerous fire departments in attendance to pay their respects.
The department extended its appreciation to the Ellsworth Fire Department for providing station coverage during the service, the Hancock Fire Department for presenting the color guard, and the Trenton Volunteer Fire Department for supplying the ladder truck used in the ceremonial flag arch.
Officials also expressed gratitude to all mutual aid partners, community members, and supporters who contributed to honoring Chief Smith’s legacy and service.
