Essex, MA – Fire Chief Christian Hassel proudly announced the graduation of four Essex firefighters from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Call/Volunteer Recruit Class #123: Hugh Gist, Joshua Heath, Kristina Jacobs, and Dylan Tinkham.

The 240-hour training program, conducted over five months during nights and weekends, provides recruits with comprehensive classroom instruction in fundamental firefighting skills. Trainees first practice techniques under non-fire conditions and later in controlled fire scenarios. To graduate, students must demonstrate proficiency in life safety, search and rescue, ladder operations, water supply, pump operation, and fire attack—ranging from small mailbox fires to multi-floor structural fires.

The 34 graduates of Call/Volunteer Recruit Class #123, celebrated at Lynnfield Middle School on March 10th, represented fire departments across Boxford, Essex, Groveland, Hamilton, Lynnfield, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Merrimac, Nahant, Newbury, Rockport, Rowley, Wenham, and West Newbury.

All four Essex graduates joined the department within the last three years and have completed both Firefighter I/II and Massachusetts Emergency Medical Technician certifications.

The Essex Fire Department congratulates these dedicated individuals as they continue to serve the community with the skills, commitment, and courage that define the fire service.
