February 24, 2026 — Town of Westfield Fire Department reported ongoing efforts to clear more than 720 fire hydrants across the community following a recent winter storm, emphasizing the importance of keeping hydrants accessible during emergencies. Fire crews, including members of Engine 5, have been actively working since the storm ended to dig out hydrants buried under heavy snow, in some cases with only locator flags visible. Officials highlighted that maintaining a three-foot clearance around hydrants, creating a path to the street, and ensuring visibility can significantly reduce response times during fires. The department is encouraging residents to assist in these efforts by clearing hydrants near their homes, noting that a few minutes of preparation can make a critical, lifesaving difference when every second counts.
