Honoring a Hero: Remembering Firefighter Michael D. Sowich

Sherrill, NY - On March 2nd, the Sherrill-Kenwood Fire Department pauses to remember and honor Firefighter Michael D. Sowich, who made the ultimate sacrifice on this day in 2007.


Firefighter Sowich passed away while attending training at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland, during the New York State Weekend program. At the time, he was serving with the New Hartford Fire Department, but he remained a longtime and deeply valued member of the Sherrill-Kenwood Fire Department, where his dedication and presence left a lasting mark.


Known for his unwavering commitment to the fire service, Michael continually sought to improve himself through training and education—demonstrating a profound dedication to protecting others and serving his community.


His loss was deeply felt, not only within his department but across the broader fire service community. Nearly two decades later, his legacy endures.


Firefighter Michael D. Sowich is remembered for his service, honored for his sacrifice, and forever regarded as a cherished member of the Sherrill-Kenwood family.
