March 8, 2026 — The Madawaska Fire Department shared photos from its recent ice water rescue training exercise, where firefighters successfully completed a series of demanding cold-weather rescue drills designed to strengthen the department’s readiness for winter emergencies. During the training, seven members achieved certification at the technician level while several others completed operations-level training. Despite challenging weather conditions, responders worked through multiple rescue evolutions that simulated real-life ice rescue scenarios, ensuring crews are prepared to respond quickly and safely should an emergency occur on frozen waterways in the region. Department officials also expressed appreciation to Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department instructor Matt Russell, who assisted in leading portions of the training. Fire officials emphasized that exercises like this are critical for maintaining the specialized skills required to safely perform ice rescues and protect residents throughout the community.
