March 6, 2026 — The Madawaska Fire Department announced preparations for a specialized ice water rescue training exercise scheduled for March 7, 2026, in partnership with the Frenchville Fire Department. The training will take place between 8:00 a.m. and noon at a pond located between Hill Avenue and Nelson Avenue in Frenchville, Maine. Firefighters have already begun preparations for the exercise, including conducting risk assessments, purchasing specialized ice rescue equipment, and cutting a controlled opening in the ice to simulate real-world emergency conditions. The drill is designed to ensure that firefighters are fully prepared to respond to potential ice-related emergencies, even though officials hope such rescues are rarely needed. Department leaders emphasized that the exercise will help crews practice critical skills and coordination required for cold-water rescues. Members of the public are welcome to observe the training but are asked to remain off the ice and avoid blocking nearby streets to ensure safety and allow emergency personnel to operate efficiently. Officials also noted that the training reflects the ongoing commitment of both departments to maintain readiness for challenging rescue situations that can occur in northern Maine’s winter conditions.
