Wallkill, NY — February 9th — Firefighters from the Walden Fire Department participated in an ice water rescue training exercise alongside members of the Wallkill Hook, Ladder, and Hose Co. The goal of the drill was to get crews ready for situations where victims fall through freezing water. As they reviewed safe methods to victims and coordinated evacuation from the water, firefighters practiced using ice rescue suits, ropes, and flotation equipment. Additionally, when working on frozen surfaces, crews received training in cooperation and communication.

In the Hudson Valley, where lakes and ponds are frequently used for ice fishing and other cold-weather entertainment, ice rescue training is a crucial component of winter readiness for fire departments. Joint training, according to officials, helps departments improve coordination and preserve rescue abilities during ice-related incidents.
