Vehicles Blocking Fire Hydrants During Emergency Response Prompt Reminder from Officials
Bay Shore, NY - On Sunday, February 8, 2026, emergency responders were dispatched to two separate working structure fires. While responding to the second incident, fire units encountered several fire hydrants that were obstructed by vehicles parked too close to them. In one instance, a hydrant was completely blocked, potentially delaying critical firefighting operations.
Officials are reminding residents and motorists that, pursuant to New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1202(3)(b)(1) and Babylon Village Code Section 343-20(A)(3)(a), parking restrictions around fire hydrants are strictly enforced. The law states that no person may stop, stand, or park a vehicle within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, except when the vehicle is attended by a licensed operator or chauffeur seated in the front seat who can immediately move the vehicle in case of an emergency, unless a different distance is indicated by official signs, markings, or parking meters.
Authorities emphasize that compliance with these regulations is essential to ensure firefighters have immediate access to hydrants during emergencies. The fine for parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant is $250.
Residents are encouraged to remain mindful of these regulations to help ensure emergency responders can do their jobs safely and without delay.
