In the New Jersey Gigs section of the December 2025 issue, there was a photograph of an Oldsmobile Roadster at the Firemen's Home Museum in Boonton. That photo brought smiles to the faces of the senior members of the Westwood Fire Department. The reason for that is because the vehicle, named Alfred and on loan to the museum, belongs to the department. Alfred used to be housed in the firehouse in an open space between one of the engines and the ladder truck. At some time around 1950, there was a barn belonging to William Baker that caught fire. Responding members of the department saved the vehicle from being lost by pushing it out of the barn. In appreciation, Mr. Baker decided to give it to the fire department. Fire damage was minimal, but Alfred was in disrepair. Repairs were made at a garage and gas station owned by Lawrence Greenip Sr., one of the members who helped rescue it from the fire. Alfred has been referred to as a 1901, 1902 and 1903 model. However, the photo of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Certificate of Ownership dated May 5, 1951 states that it is a 1900 model Oldsmobile Roadster. Alfred has been driven in the borough's Memorial Day parades in the past, but not recently. Another photo is of 1951 Chief Walter Hopper standing with Alfred on the apron of the 1929 firehouse. That building was razed in 1997 in preparation for the new headquarters that was constructed in the same location. In the mid-1980's, the Boonton Home management was looking for memorabilia to occupy the museum. The decision was made to put Alfred on display at the home. The members also felt that the vehicle would be less vulnerable to damage in a museum setting instead of on an open floor within the firehouse.
