New Milford - Firefighters were toned out to 732 Berkely St around 3:30pm for a report of smoke in the home and a possible house fire. First arriving units were met with smoke showing and a confirmed basement fire. Command requested the working fire assignment to be filled out, bringing mutual aid from Dumont, Oradell, and River Edge to the scene. Engine 32 was first to arrive, wrapped the hydrant and stretched an 1.75" attack line to the side door access to the basement. A second line was stretched as the truck company made a search of the home. Heavy smoke emitted from the front door as well as multiple windows on the first and second floors. Firefighters in the basement, with little visibility were making an attack as heavy fire vented from the basement window on the delta side. Command ordered the evacuation of the house so companies could knock the fire from the exterior and re-enter the basement. A 3rd line was stretched and the heavy fire was knocked down from the exterior. Crews made another interior attack and was able to knock the remaining fire in the basement with little extension to the upper floors. Firefighters remained on scene to check for hot spots and extension. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
