This is a soft cover book measuring six inches by nine inches, with 123 pages. The book was written in 2024 and the author is a battalion chief with the New York City FD. This is a Fire Engineering Magazine publication and the author is a contributor. Besides the introduction and brief glossary, there are 11 chapters and an epilogue. As part of the introduction, the author states, “It is not critical to each of these stories as to what names are used or where they happened; the important message is to convey a lesson learned that can be passed onto another firefighter.” That about sums up what this book is about. It centers around different crew members, both “probies” and seasoned firefighters and officers in different boroughs. The company numbers are fictitious in each of these stories. The focus of these incidents is to bring the firefighter home to his family when the shift is over. The book is loaded with black and white photos to help illustrate the scenarios with regard to the stories. At the back of the book are two chapters, one on Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and the part that members of the FDNY volunteered their time to assist the NOFD, and the other is about the attack on the World trade Center in 2001. This book is an easy read, but one in which lessons learned can be a lifesaver.
