The is a heavy, hard covered book measuring 9 inches by 12 inches and has 223 pages of “magnificence.” To review this book it was evident that it was a labor of love. In the credits are listed a vast number of those who contributed otherwise. The inside front and back covers and the first and last pages have the names of everyone who served on this company. There is an introduction followed by the present captain’s introduction. Rescue 2 was established in the Borough of Brooklyn, New York in 1925, ten years after Rescue 1 was established in Manhattan by the same fire chief. The chapters include Establishing Rescue 2, Chief of Department (three of their members became chief), Rescue Company 2 Captains, Current Officers and Members, Company History 1, Mission of Rescue Company 2, Unit Citation Meritorious Acts, Chief Ray Downey, A Legend From Rescue 2, Rescue Company 2 Medal Winners, Company History II, Members Who Made the Supreme Sacrifice, September 11, 2001, Rescue Company No. 2 Rigs, Tools and Equipment, Company History III, Firehouses Past and Present and Rescue 2; The “Busiest” Rescue Company in the City of New York. The book is filled with photos of all kinds, most without captions but nevertheless associated with each chapter. There were also a Searchlight Unit and a Water Tower who were assigned to the company that were manned by the personnel when special called. The names of each chapter dusts off vast, detailed information within them. It goes without saying that this is a book that anyone with an interest in the New York City Fire Department, or history for that matter, should consider purchasing. Compared to the contents, the price is very reasonable.
