As ice continues to build on nearby ponds and lakes, the Alton, New Hampshire, Fire Department is advising locals to exercise caution. Members have already seen individuals going out onto the ice in precarious situations. Early-season ice is particularly unpredictable because of the wide variations in ice thickness caused by shifting temperatures, currents, and concealed weak areas. Even when the ice looks solid, conditions can change quickly at this time of year.
It is advisable for locals who frequently engage in recreational activities on ice to consider wearing flotation gear, carrying ice picks, and avoiding areas with open or moving water, pressure ridges, and fissures. The Alton Fire Department urges everyone to use good judgment, follow ice safety guidelines, and remember that when in doubt, it’s best to stay off the ice. Stay safe and enjoy the winter season responsibly.
