On December 11, at around 7:35 p.m., Westport firefighters were called to a reported chimney fire that had spread to the roof, and they cleared the scene of a structure fire on Division Road.
When Engine 3 arrived, the attic fire was blazing through the roof and the side of the house. Before it was discovered, the fire seemed to have been going on for a while. The main body of fire was swiftly put out by crews, who then limited it to the impacted area. Smoldering debris and pockets of fire behind a massive fieldstone inner wall necessitated a thorough overhaul. In addition to off-duty and on-call firemen, Westport Engine 3 and Engine 4, Tanker 1, Ladder 7, Chiefs 1 and 2, and others worked on the scene. Mutual help was given by Dartmouth Fire Districts 2 and 3.
The property owners are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross and Westport EMA. There were no reported injuries. The Westport Fire Department reminds residents to have heating systems and chimneys cleaned and inspected before every heating season to reduce the risk of fire.
