Windham Center, Connecticut — November 25 — Firefighter Mark McClure provided a classroom instruction on chimney fires for the Windham Centre Fire Department, North Windham, and South Windham Fire Departments. Chimney fire development, suppression techniques, ventilation procedures, and coordination during multi-departmental reactions were the main topics of discussion. Prior to the cooler months, when wood stoves and fireplaces are used more regularly, training was conducted. According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are over 25,000 chimney fires in the US annually. Fire officials observe that early involvement and appropriate procedures can lower the risk to firefighters and property damage. As winter draws near, the Windham Centre Fire Department, located at 18 Windham Centre Road, Windham, Connecticut, advises locals to adhere to home heating safety procedures.
