Thompson, Connecticut. — November 19 — In order to give personnel a realistic environment in which to hone fundamental skills, the Thompson Fire Engine Company held a combined training session at a house that was slated for demolition. Participants were members of the East Putnam Fire Department and the East Thompson Volunteer Fire Department.
Using hand tools and saws frequently found on engines and trucks, firefighters concentrated on forced entrance procedures and ventilation techniques. Crews were able to learn about building aspects, practice synchronized motions, and strengthen clear radio and in-person communication while working in an acquired structure. Throughout the evolution, training officers placed a strong emphasis on teamwork, safety, and tool control. While the exercise improved coordination between nearby departments during regular mutual aid operations, acquired-structure training is still crucial for firefighter training and readiness.
