East Putnam, Connecticut — December 16 — When a fire alarm went off at the Matulaitis Nursing Facility on Thurber Road, the East Putnam Fire Department, which is based at 263 Providence Turnpike, responded. While travelling, Quinebaug Valley Emergency Communications informed the crews that they had discovered a tiny fire in the ceiling and put it out with a dry chemical extinguisher. When firefighters arrived, they discovered smoke on the A Wing's second story. Residents were sheltered in place and moved to different wings by facility workers. Crews completed extinguishment with a water can and overhauled the area of origin. The fire was confined to an attached bathroom of an occupied room. Two occupants were transported by Putnam EMS to Day Kimball Hospital for evaluation of possible minor smoke inhalation. The facility returned to normal operations. Officials.
