Witmer Fire Protective Association volunteers responded to a daytime call on Nov. 4 alongside Company 63 after being dispatched for an investigation inside a residence for a smoke detector activation. Upon arrival, crews detected dangerously high carbon monoxide levels—measuring approximately 100 parts per million—inside the home. Firefighters investigated the source, made proper notifications, and ventilated the structure, preventing what officials said could have become a life-threatening situation if exposure had continued. Carbon monoxide, often called the “invisible killer,” is a colorless, odorless gas produced by incomplete combustion, commonly from household heating or cooking equipment. Fire officials emphasized the importance of working CO alarms, proper appliance ventilation, and safe practices to prevent poisoning. Later in the day, approximately 50 members from Companies 61, 62, and 63 participated in a walk-through tour of Scenic Ridge Company to familiarize crews with potential hazards. Lafayette Fire Company and Upper Leacock Fire Company also assisted.
