Greenfield, NY — November 11 —As colder weather approaches, the Greenfield Fire District reminds residents to prepare their chimneys before lighting their fires. Crews warn that creosote buildup inside a chimney might ignite, resulting in a chimney fire if not properly maintained.

Homeowners should have their chimneys inspected and cleaned by a licensed professional at least once every year. Firefighters also advise burning only dry, seasoned wood and avoiding combustible liquids while starting a fire. Taking basic actions now can help avoid heating-related crises during the winter season.
