November 24, 2025 —Alachua County Fire Rescue reported a heroic incident involving crews from Engine 21 and Rescue 21, who worked together to save a man in crisis on an overpass along CR 236 near the 404-mile marker.

According to the department, Rescue 21 was returning from a call on the interstate when its crew spotted a man sitting on the edge of the overpass. They immediately notified the Combined Communications Center and began assessing the situation. Engine 21, traveling just behind them, stopped to assist.

Upon arrival, Engine 21’s crew found the man with an off-duty law enforcement officer attempting to de-escalate the situation from a safe distance. Recognizing the urgency, firefighters from E21 carefully approached and were able to reach the individual, ultimately pulling him to safety before he could harm himself.

The department commended Lt. Mike Fris, DO Steve Toth, FF Jake Levine, and FF Alexander Garavito from Engine 21, along with Relief Lt. Arvin Ehrler and FF Delaney Crosby from Rescue 21, for their decisive actions and teamwork under pressure.

Alachua County Fire Rescue noted that the incident serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role first responders play both on and off emergency calls, and the importance of looking out for community members in need.
