Earlier this week, two members of the Lincoln Fire Company—Assistant Chief Sean McCabe and Captain Walt Bair—completed Flashover Recognition and Survival training at the Pennsylvania Fire Academy.

A flashover is one of the most dangerous events firefighters can encounter, occurring when all combustible materials in a space ignite at once. Warning signs may include extreme heat exceeding 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, fire rolling across the ceiling, and dense black smoke. In such conditions, firefighters typically have only seconds to escape or rapidly cool the environment to survive.

During the program, instructors used a controlled burn inside a modified conex box to demonstrate fire behavior, heat progression, oxygen impacts, and flashover indicators. This realistic training reinforces critical decision-making skills necessary to protect both firefighters and the public.

Lincoln Fire Company emphasizes continuous training to maintain operational readiness for the residents of its coverage area and mutual-aid partners. While this course was offered at no cost, many advanced training opportunities require funding for instructors, equipment, and materials. Community support remains essential to ensuring firefighters remain well-prepared and properly equipped.
