Township of Spring, Pa. — November 9, 2025 — On Sunday evening, Township of Spring Fire Rescue responded to Howard Street in the Millmont portion of the township after receiving a report of a suspected structure fire. The caller stated that an expansion tank had exploded in the basement, creating concerns about fire spread. A full mutual-aid response was sent, including Wyomissing Fire Department Ladder 79, Western Berks Fire Department Ladder 18 and Engine 18-1, Shillington Engine 36, Kenhorst Engine 69-1, Mohnton Station 57 for RIT, and Western Berks EMS.
Wyomissing Deputy 18-1 came first, reporting normal outside conditions. When Township of Spring Fire Rescue arrived, command was passed to DC 85. Engine 85 built its own water supply, visited with the homeowner, and discovered water and steam pouring from the furnace system with no evidence of an active fire. The crews turned off electricity at the breaker box and engaged the furnace's emergency shutoff. Air monitoring showed normal readings throughout the home, and no hazards were found. With no active fire conditions present, command scaled the incident back to Engine 85, Ladder 79, and Engine 18-1, while the remaining companies were released. All personnel cleared the scene shortly after.
