Wampum, Pa. — October 22 — Chewton Vol. Fire Department conducted a concentrated training session on downed firefighter tactics and casualty removal. In order to transport victims effectively in cramped or low-visibility situations, crews performed a number of "dirty drag" techniques, such as leg locks and 4-point arm-lock moves. These abilities are still a fundamental component of training programs in many volunteer organizations in western Pennsylvania.
Additionally, firefighters went over Rapid Intervention Team protocols, which included rope or webbing operations for more intricate extractions, the use of harnesses and belts for removals, and air-pack conversions for rescue. A mayday-communication refresher to strengthen standardized, unambiguous radio practices concluded the evening. Regular exercises like this, according to the agency, promote improved response skills for both firefighter safety and community protection.
