North Yarmouth, ME - First responders from North Yarmouth Fire Rescue and surrounding mutual aid agencies contained a rapidly spreading woods fire off Lufkin Road late Friday afternoon after high winds brought a tree limb into energized electrical infrastructure in Cumberland County.
Dispatchers transmitted the initial alarm at 5:39 p.m. on Friday, October 30, 2026, for a reported woods fire in the vicinity of 207 Lufkin Road in North Yarmouth. Arriving at 5:43 p.m., Squad 51 and Chief 501 found an active fire covering an estimated 100-foot-by-200-foot wooded area that was spreading quickly through dry brush.
Command was established by Chief 501, who promptly struck an "all hands" tanker response to secure mobile water resources. The upgraded assignment brought mutual aid assets, including Pownal Tank 4, Yarmouth Tank 83, Cumberland Engine 102, and Pownal Squad 3.
The crew of Squad 51 stretched and operated two 1¾-inch suppression handlines, achieving initial perimeter containment within approximately five minutes. While Yarmouth Tank 83 was returned to service, incoming units from Pownal and Cumberland were maintained on scene to supply water due to prevailing dry conditions.
Crews conducted an extensive hour-and-a-half overhaul and mop-up operation, deploying roughly 10,000 gallons of water to saturate deep ground embers and eliminate remaining hot spots.
Central Maine Power (CMP) and the Maine Forest Service responded to the scene to assist with power isolation and fire investigation. Officials determined the fire originated when a tree branch blew into overhead power lines, ignited, and fell burning to the woodland floor.
Shortly after clearing the Lufkin Road incident and returning to service, North Yarmouth Tank 53 was redeployed to the Town of Cumberland to provide mutual aid coverage for a separate ongoing incident.
