Ellington, Conn. — November 6 —The Ellington Volunteer Fire Department (EVFD) joined forces with the Crystal Lake Fire Department (CLFD) earlier this week for a joint training focused on chimney fires and carbon monoxide (CO) emergencies. With cooler temperatures prompting residents to use fireplaces and heating systems more frequently, both departments reviewed seasonal hazards and practiced coordinated response strategies.
Members received training on how to safely handle these situations by using Truck 143 to practice ladder operations, chimney access, and ventilation techniques. Additionally, firefighters went over how to respond to CO alarms, stressing the value of early detection and prompt action. CO is colorless and odorless, and residents should never ignore alarms, department officials reminded them. If a CO alarm goes off, anyone should leave right away, dial 911, and wait outside for help.
The EVFD continues to welcome new members and encourages anyone interested in joining to email membership@ellingtonfire.org for details on becoming part of the team.
