Newbury, NH - First responders from Newbury Fire Rescue, regional emergency crews, and New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officers coordinated an extensive nighttime wilderness search Tuesday evening, successfully locating an overdue hiker along the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway.
New London Dispatch alerted Newbury Fire Rescue at 7:56 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, after a third party reported that a hiker was overdue from a trek on Mount Sunapee in Merrimack County and could not be reached. The individual was initially believed to have embarked from the Andrew Brook Trailhead off Mountain Road in Newbury.
Newbury companies responded to the Mountain Road staging point and the Mount Sunapee Resort area while command staff established liaison with New Hampshire Fish and Game. Following the arrival of two conservation officers, updated geographic data indicated the hiker was traveling along the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway corridor and could be reached more effectively from the Pillsbury State Park trailheads across the county line in Sullivan County (Town of Washington).
Personnel repositioned operational staging to Pillsbury State Park, with Newbury dispatching Engine 4 alongside its specialized Ranger utility task vehicle (UTV) to support off-road search assets. Mutual aid and emergency medical resources from the Washington Ambulance, Goshen Fire Department, and Lempster Fire Department (operating an ATV) responded to assist in the backcountry search.
New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers made contact with the hiker along the trail network and safely escorted the individual back to the command post at Pillsbury State Park without injury. All Newbury apparatus and personnel cleared the incident and returned to quarters by approximately 11:30 p.m.
