Newbury, NH - Emergency responders from Newbury Fire Rescue, the Newbury Police Department, and New London Ambulance executed a technical trail-and-litter rescue Saturday evening after a vehicle left the roadway and plunged down a steep, wooded embankment along Route 103 in Merrimack County.
Dispatchers alerted first responders at approximately 5:37 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2026, for a reported single-vehicle accident near the junction of Route 103 and Old Post Road in Merrimack County. A responding police officer pinpointed the vehicle down a steep ravine off Route 103, situated between the crest of Ledge Hill and Mountain Road, where the car had penetrated deep into the tree line below.
Crews aboard Newbury Rescue 1 and Engine 4 descended the terrain on foot and located the operator still seated inside the vehicle. Paramedics from New London Ambulance joined firefighters at the bottom of the embankment to assess the patient while assisting with patient extrication from the passenger compartment.
Rescuers packaged the driver into a rigid rescue litter basket and navigated along an adjoining trail network to reach a more gradual slope, successfully hauling the patient up the hill to an awaiting transport unit. The driver was subsequently transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further medical evaluation.
Newbury Fire Rescue and police officers maintained active traffic management operations along Route 103 as a pair of heavy-duty wreckers winched and recovered the damaged vehicle from the woods. All emergency units secured equipment and cleared the Merrimack County scene at approximately 7:45 p.m.
