Vernon, Vt. — October 10 — Members of the Vernon Fire Department spent Friday at Vernon Elementary School for the department’s annual Fire Prevention Day. Firefighters met with each classroom throughout the day to discuss this year’s national theme, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”

Crews explained what lithium-ion batteries are, pointed out common household devices that use them, and discussed how to safely charge and store them. Students also learned about the risks associated with damaged batteries and improper charging practices. The lesson used the acronym C.H.A.R.G.E. to reinforce key safety points and help students remember how to stay safe at home.
