Keene, N.H. — October 31 — At approximately 4:25 a.m., Keene Fire Department units were dispatched to 125 Davis Street following a report of an apartment fire.During their transit, law enforcement indicated that flames were visible emanating from a third-floor window on the Delta side, posing an imminent threat to an adjacent structure.
The deployment of Car 4, which engaged the full-box assignment, facilitated the arrival of mutual aid resources from three states. Keene Police officers coordinated the establishment of a water supply and notified residents within the structure. Subsequently, C-Shift firefighters achieved fire control approximately three minutes after the working fire assignment was initiated.
The Professional Firefighters of Keene, representing IAFF Local 3265, extended their gratitude to law enforcement officers and mutual aid agencies for their critical contributions at the incident site and for ensuring adequate coverage across the remainder of the municipality.
Furthermore, the union cited the incident as compelling evidence of the urgent necessity for robust fire department staffing.
While the police support demonstrated exemplary interdepartmental collaboration, the union emphasized that firefighters require sufficient personnel to execute essential duties, including securing water supplies, conducting searches, deploying hose lines, and providing exposure protection.
Although Keene had secured a federal SAFER grant to fund eight additional firefighter positions, the initiative remained contingent upon securing municipal approval and completing the requisite funding procedures. The union asserted that establishing a minimum staffing threshold of fifteen personnel would be instrumental in converting additional positions into a reliable, on-duty response capacity. The department, situated at 31 Vernon Street in Keene, New Hampshire, operated under the zip code 03431.
