North Hills, N.Y. — October 3 — On October 3, the Manhasset-Lakeville Volunteer Fire Department was called to a reported residential fire at 211 Hornbill Drive in North Hills involving a trapped occupant; the full complement of department units was dispatched at 9:27 a.m.
Upon arrival, department leaders verified the presence of a working fire and ascertained that a resident remained trapped within the structure. Deputy Chiefs Porras (8703) and Chen (8705) breached the residence, successfully located the occupant, and extricated them by means of a window. Simultaneously, personnel from the department's Ambulance Unit and representatives of the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) stood by outside the property to provide immediate assistance.
Employing a strategic combination of multiple handlines and a deck-mounted cannon, firefighters successfully subdued the well-advanced blaze, with operational support provided by several adjacent fire departments.
The rescued resident and one NCPD officer were transported to area hospitals. Police reported that both were treated for smoke inhalation. Three firefighters sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the scene.
Following the incident, the Nassau County Fire Marshal and the Nassau County Police Arson Bomb Squad were dispatched to ascertain the fire's origin; however, the investigation remains in progress. Headquartered at 170 East Shore Road in Great Neck, New York, the Manhasset-Lakeville Volunteer Fire Department maintained operations through five distinct fire companies, alongside dedicated Ambulance and Fire Police units.
