Freetown, Mass. — Oct. 9 — The communications center received reports of smoke in a house at 34 South Main Street in the Assonet village area of town, prompting the dispatch of the Freetown Fire Department at 2:30 p.m. The department's three stations received an alert.
While crews were en route, Car 1 was updated by arriving police officers that heavy smoke was visible in the area. In response, a “working fire assignment” was called, bringing in mutual-aid from the neighbouring towns of Berkley Fire Department and Lakeville Fire Department, and dispatching the Dartmouth Fire Department District 3 to cover at headquarters. The Providence Canteen Service was also called in for crew rehabilitation.
Upon arrival, Car 1 reported a large fire coming from a window in the building's D/C corner. Pets were still missing, but all of the house's occupants were found. Firefighters swiftly put out the majority of the fire by advancing a transitional attack. Berkley Paramedics transported one resident to Charlton Memorial Hospital with minor cuts, while Fall River EMS transported another resident with minor burns and suspected smoke inhalation. The residence suffered severe damage to both floors, with smoke and excessive heat noted throughout. Three of the household’s five cats were found deceased, and two remain missing at this time. No firefighters were injured during the incident. The American Red Cross assisted the displaced residents.
