Taberg, N.Y. — October 26, 2026 — Taberg Volunteer Fire Company responded to a brush fire near Theobold Hatfield Road at around 3:30 p.m. A day after the fire spread through over an acre of vegetation and threatened two nearby cabins.
Crews from Taberg deployed with Engine 1, Tanker 1, EMS 1, and UTV 1, initially assigning 10 members to the incident. Firefighters faced challenges due to a forest fire situated approximately one mile down a temporary road, which restricted use of standard equipment.
Because the area was remote, fire spread and a potential threat to the cabins prompted a request for the Lee Center and Florence fire departments to send extra brush trucks, utility terrain vehicles, and personnel. New York State Forest Rangers helped with the operation. Initial crews found more than an acre burned and worked to stop the fire’s advance using hand tools and Indian tanks. UTVs and brush trucks then accessed the fire area to complete extinguishment and mop-up operations.
